Fittipaldi scored his fourth of five (Spain, Belgium, Britain, Austria and Italy) Grand Prix victories at the 1972 Austrian Grand Prix.
Starting from the pole position, Fittipaldi once again staged an exciting nose to tail race with Jackie Stewart. This continued until lap 20 when Stewart was forced to slow down due to oversteering problems. Denis Hulme then picked up the challenge but could not pass Fittipaldi in spite of his best efforts. Fittipaldi managed to hold Hulme off and win the race by the narrow margin of 1.18 seconds.
Fittipaldi's Austrian Grand Prix victory was also his fourth and last win during the 1972 season in Lotus 72D chassis number 72D/7. At seasons end Fittipaldi was crowned the youngest World Champion ever at age 25. It is also interesting to note that Fittipaldi won two more Grands Prix (Argentina and Brazil) with Lotus 72D/7 in 1973.
