In spite of suffering from engine problems, recently crowned world champion Niki Lauda dominated practice and qualifying for the USGP, winning the pole position at Watkins Glen. When the race started, Lauda and Fittipaldi ran together for 20 laps before Fittipaldi's line was impeded by Clay Regazzoni who was off the pace due to mechanical problems. By the time Fittipaldi got by, Lauda's lead had increased from one to ten seconds. When the race ended, Lauda was well ahead of second place Fittipaldi and he celebrated his fifth 1975 Grand Prix victory, along with wins at Monaco, Belgium, Sweden, and France. This was the first ever victory for Ferrari at the United States Grand Prix.
