After the corporate heads at GM announced that Chevrolet was in no way involved with the Mecom Racing Team, all three Grand Sport Coupes were handed over to privateers. This Grand Sport, chassis 004, was raced at Green Valley Raceway outside Forth Worth, Texas, by Dallas Chevrolet dealer Delmo Johnson, Jr., before the car was retrieved by its new owner, Grady Davis.
Davis entered chassis 004, still wearing its Mecom Blue metallic paint, in the season opening USRRC race at Augusta International Speedway in Georgia; to be piloted by famed East Coast Corvette driver, Don Yenko. Yenko had considerable driving experience in the original, smaller engine Corvettes but this was his first and only drive in the Grand Sport since they had been extensively modified for Nassau.
Since this car was to compete at Sebring, just two weeks later, Yenko did not push the Grand Sport to its full capability. After a smooth, uneventful drive, Yenko finished 11th overall.
