In 1970 Ferrari started the new season with an improved semi-monocoque chassis and a new flat 12 cylinder engine. This car became known as the Ferrari 312B. The B stood for the flat-12 Boxer engine. At the Mexican Grand Prix in October of 1970, Ickx qualified in third position and later won his third Grand Prix of the season. When the green flag fell, Clay Regazzoni took the lead but he was over taken by both Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx on the first lap.
By lap three, Ickx had taken the lead and, by half distance, he was 15 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. When the checkered flag fell, Ferrari had an impressive one two finish with Ickx finishing first and Regazzoni finishing second. Jacky Ickx finished second in the 1970 Grand Prix championship.
