The British Grand Prix was Clay Regazzonis second Grand Prix start for the Ferrari team and he hoped to prove his worth. During practice and qualifying, Regazzoni struggled with engine problems and was lucky to qualify in the third row. When the race started, Regazzoni got away in the top 10 and was in a close race with Denis Hulme, Jackie Stewart, and Jean Pierre Beltoise for fourth place.
As the race entered its final laps, a furious battle for third and fourth place developed between Hulme and Regazzoni. This battle continued to the finish with Hulme just barely edging Regazzoni for third place.
